Fireworks stands will open July 1 in Wellington city limits

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Fourth of July holiday is still eight days away but in Wellington, the official start of shooting off fireworks begin on July 1.Currently there are three fireworks stands which have gotten Wellington city permits for stands within the city limits:•Wholesale Fireworks  – Smoker’s Choice.•Wholesale Fireworks – Theurer’s Auction Realty.•TNT – North of Wellington Wal-Mart parking lot.Firework retail sales hours will start at 10 a.m. on July 1 and last until 10 p.m. The stands will also be open on July 2 and 3, 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. and July 4 from 10 a.m. until midnight.Discharge of fireworks in the city are from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 1st through July 3rd and 10 a.m. to midnight on July 4th.No fireworks shall at any time be discharged at the Wellington Lake.Only Class C fireworks are allowed to be discharged and no bottle rockets or similar configurations are allowed.“Violation of the city firework ordinance Chapter 20, Article VII and the Kansas State firework statutes can result in a fine and/or confiscation of fireworks,” said Wellington Fire Chief Tim Hay.  “Ultimately, the behavior of the general public discharging fireworks will determine whether further restrictions are needed.”Here are some safety and common sense tips•Always supervise children!!!!•Sparklers are the major cause of firework injuries to children•Discharge fireworks away from combustible materials and structures•Do not dispose of recently discharged fireworks into a combustible container or dumpster until the fireworks are soaked in water•Have consideration for neighbors who have pets or go to sleep early•Have a fire extinguisher or water readily available•It is illegal to discharge from a vehicle•It is illegal to shoot in a roadway or within 50 feet of a firework stand or gas station•If you have questions concerning firework use or safety please call the Wellington Fire/EMS Department at 620-326-7443. I was once told that there are no time restrictions for the county and fireworks can be shot at anytime. Would be nice to clarify what those guidelines are.
