first_imgDonegal Golf Club (Murvagh)- President’s weekend.Mr Eamon Canney’s President’s weekend commenced on Fri the 7th when the Junior members of the club competed and Eddie McGinty set a high standard for the weekend shooting 46pts to take the Youths prize. The Ladies took to the course on Saturday and the weather conditions, including a strong breeze and showers made for difficult scoring. Ger Breslin overcame the conditions best taking 1st place on a score of 76. She had just one shot to spare on Margaret Trimble and Mary Talbot who were separated for 2nd and 3rd by a break of tie. Bernie Finn  took  4th on 79. The Men competed on Sunday and Darren Rafferty had his best round at Murvagh when he covered the course in one under to take 1st place on a score of 43pts. Gerard Gallagher had 41pts for 2nd place with Joe Cannon and Conor McNulty 3rd and 4th with 40pts and 39pts respectively.Sunday evening saw the presentation of prizes with a large crowd enjoying an excellent meal and music.President Eamon Canney commenced proceedings by welcoming his beloved Lady Captain, his wife Moragh, Vice Captain’s, visiting Presidents, fellow club Members Family and Friends.  He commented that he considered it is a tremendous honour and privilege for him to be President of Donegal Golf Club, a course that is consistently ranked amongst the top twenty courses in the country. He considered that this ranking does not happen by default but demands a lot of time and effort, a huge proportion of which is contributed voluntarily by the members of the various committees coupled with diligent staff who work hard in the House, on the Course and in the Administration section. He thanked all of the members for their courtesy and kindness to him throughout the year. Having attended a number of both men’s and ladies team matches this year, he expressed his admiration to all of those team members for their eagerness in taking part in teams and being tremendous ambassadors for the club. He also visited a number of golf clubs during the year and felt very proud to be representing Donegal Golf Club especially when you learn of the great reputation the club enjoys among its peers. Gerry McCormack finished 2nd with 31pts and Charlie McGinty claimed 3rd place with 29pts on a break of tie from Bob Dore in 4th with 29pts.Joe Craig won the prize for the 1st 9 and Francis Brogan was the best of the past players with 31pts.Players are reminded that the Quarter Final matches of the Phoenix cup must be played by the 12th August.This Year’s weekend away will be held on the 10th\11th October at Westport Golf Club.
