WASHINGTON – Republican leaders, top Democrats and President Donald Trump are all claiming big wins in the $400 billion budget agreement signed into law Friday. But the push to pass the massive legislation underscored enduring divisions within both parties, and those rifts are likely to make the next fight over immigration even more challenging. In Washington’s latest display of governance by brinkmanship, the bipartisan accord bolstering military and domestic programs and deepening federal deficits crossed the finish line just before dawn — but not before the government shut down overnight.Passage left nerves frayed and Democrats with little leverage to force congressional action on their most high-profile priority: preventing deportation of hundreds of thousands of the young immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children and remain here without permanent legal protection.Lawmakers rushed to limit the disruption and impact over the lapse in government funding, voting in the middle of the night to reopen agencies before workers were due to report to the office. It was the government’s second shutdown in three weeks, and most lawmakers were eager to avoid a big show of dysfunction in an election year.Sen. Rand Paul did not share the urgency. Late Thursday, the tea party leader and Kentucky Republican put the brakes on the bill in protest over Congress’ sudden willingness to embrace big deficit spending. Paul noted that he and many in his party railed against deficit when Democrats held the White House, but now seemed willing to look the other way with Republicans in control. He said he hoped his stand would teach conservatives “to not accept just anything because it comes from a GOP Congress.”Paul’s call clearly angered Republican leaders — Sen. John Cornyn called it “grossly irresponsible” — and it exposed a contradiction that may come to haunt Republicans as they try to fire up conservatives in midterm elections. The budget measure provides Pentagon spending increases sought by Trump and the GOP, more money for domestic agencies demanded by Democrats and $89 billion that both wanted for disaster relief. The two-year pact, which also continues the government’s authority to borrow money, postpones any possible federal default or likely shutdowns until after the November elections. But the 652-page budget bill says nothing about protection for the “Dreamer” immigrants. That omission largely explains why a quarter of Senate Democrats and two-thirds of House Democrats voted no, and why immigration now because the next battle. In January, after a three-day closure, Senate Democrats secured from GOP leaders the promise of a debate and vote on a deal to protect the younger immigrants from deportation.“Democrats have fought hard but, in the end, many opted to say yes to other priorities and leave Dreamers behind,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of the pro-immigration America’s Voice. He called that decision plus opposition by many Republicans “inhumane and indecent.”Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., set next Monday as the start of a free-wheeling immigration battle, a debate he promised when Democrats agreed to vote to reopen the government last month. Ryan hasn’t scheduled House consideration, infuriating Democrats, but he said Friday, “We will focus on bringing that debate to this floor and finding a solution.”Democrats want to extend the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which lets the immigrants temporarily live and work in the U.S. but that Trump would end March 5. The Democrats also want to make the immigrants eligible for citizenship or permanent residence. In exchange, Trump wants $25 billion to build his beloved, proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall and other barriers. He also wants reductions in legal immigration, including limiting the relatives whom legal residents can sponsor and eliminating a lottery that offers visas to residents of diverse countries. There’s no obvious compromise that could win the 60 votes from Republicans and Democrats needed to prevail in the Senate. The most promising outcome may be a narrow bill extending DACA protections for a year or so and providing some border security money for Trump.Whatever happens, this week’s budget battle dealt a clear immigration defeat to Democrats, who’d initially vowed to block spending bills until there was a deal to help the Dreamers. The setback left party members divided.No. 2 Senate Democratic leader Richard Durbin of Illinois, a leader in the immigration fight, said the budget pact “opens the door” for Senate votes on protecting the young immigrants. But Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., said anyone supporting the spending measure was “colluding with this president and this administration to deport Dreamers.”Such disputes won’t help the party energize the Hispanic and liberal voters it will need as it tries capturing House and perhaps Senate control in November.Immigration divides Republicans, too.Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona is preparing compromises to offer during his chamber’s upcoming debate and says his party will suffer in November if the issue isn’t addressed. No. 3 House GOP leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana says Republicans still disagree about “how to handle this number of people that Barack Obama encouraged to come in here illegally.”With the immigration fight looming, Congress voted overnight to finance the government through March 23, giving budget-writers time to craft detailed legislation funding agencies through the rest of this fiscal year. The House voted 240-186 to approve the bill just before dawn Eastern time, hours after the Senate approved the measure 71-28, with some of Congress’ most conservative and liberal lawmakers voting no. Trump signed it as business hours began, and he couldn’t resist a dig.“This Bill is a BIG VICTORY for our Military, but much waste in order to get Dem votes,” he tweeted. “Fortunately, DACA not included in this Bill, negotiations to start now!”___Associated Press writers Matthew Daly and Andrew Taylor contributed to this report.__This story corrects that about two-thirds, not one-third, of House Democrats voted against the bill. read more

New Delhi: Delhi BJP leader Vijender Gupta Sunday lodged a police complaint against Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia accusing them of hatching a conspiracy to falsely implicate him in criminal cases. Theater shooting prosecutors rest after building emotional, detailed case against James Holmes CENTENNIAL, Colo. – Prosecutors in the Colorado theatre shooting trial rested Friday, concluding their argument that James Holmes methodically planned and executed the 2012 massacre in a case that relied heavily — over defence objections — on victims’ recollections of the carnage he inflicted inside the darkened cinema.Over the past eight weeks, prosecutors weaved experts’ testimony with survivors’ personal stories to try to convince jurors that Holmes was sane when he opened fire on a midnight showing of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” The former neuroscience student killed 12 people and wounded 70.For its last witness, the prosecution called a survivor whose story was among the most heart-wrenching. Ashley Moser was paralyzed and suffered a miscarriage in the shooting, and her 6-year-old daughter, Veronica, was killed.Moser came to the witness stand in a motorized wheelchair. She described hearing what she thought were kids setting off fireworks in the theatre, and wanting to leave. She reached for her daughter’s hand, but it slipped away. The soft-spoken Moser used a tissue to wipe away tears as she described the attack. She said it started with an explosion and something spewing gas behind her, then bright flashes at the front of the room. Moser said she assumed someone was setting off fireworks as a prank, and she stood up to take her daughter’s hand and leave.“Did her hand reach back?” prosecutor George Brauchler asked.“It just slipped through my hand,” she replied.Moser said she felt a pain in her chest and fell on top of her daughter, but couldn’t move.“I heard the movie still playing and people crying and screaming,” Moser said, vaguely recalling being carried out of the theatre. She learned later that her daughter was dead.As Moser testified from her wheelchair, Holmes stared straight ahead, slightly swiveling in his chair. The prosecution rested after displaying Veronica’s kindergarten graduation picture. The gallery was packed, and several victims and their relatives hugged and thanked prosecutors once the jury was dismissed for the day.Holmes’ lawyers will now begin calling their own psychiatrists and presenting other evidence to argue Holmes was in the grips of a psychotic episode at the time of the shootings and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. They plan to begin their case Thursday. The defence says Holmes’ mental illness distorted his sense of right and wrong, a key factor the jury must consider in determining if he was sane. Holmes’ attorneys say he should be committed to the state mental hospital.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.Holmes abandoned a prestigious graduate program at the University of Colorado-Denver before he opened fire at the suburban Denver movie theatre where more than 400 people were watching the midnight premier.Prosecutors showed jurors nearly 21 hours of Holmes’ videotaped interviews with a state-appointed psychiatrist who concluded Holmes was seriously mentally ill but legally sane at the time of the shooting. On the video, Holmes said he felt nothing as he took aim at fleeing moviegoers. Halting and awkward, he blurted out that he feared being stopped from committing what he acknowledged was a crime.Prosecutors also took jurors on a video tour of the theatre, the camera moving past bodies wedged between rows of seats or sprawled throughout aisles amid spent ammunition, spilled popcorn and blood. The footage, taken by an investigator, zoomed in on bullet fragments, bloody stairs and shoes left behind in the panic to escape.Prosecutors introduced a brown spiral notebook Holmes kept titled “Of Life,” in which he scrawled a self-diagnosis of his “broken mind” and described an “obsession to kill” since childhood.Holmes made lists of weapons he planned to buy and included detailed drawings of the theatre complex, complete with pros and cons of attacking different auditoriums and police response times.Dr. Lynne Fenton, the university psychiatrist who treated Holmes before the attack, testified she did not have enough evidence to have him detained but was so concerned after he confessed his homicidal thoughts that she violated his health care privacy to call his mother.Trial began April 27 after three months of jury selection that produced 12 jurors and 12 alternates. Five of those jurors have been dismissed — three amid concern they were exposed to news of the proceedings, one after her brother-in-law was wounded in a Denver ATM robbery, and one because she recognized a witness. That left 19 jurors, including seven alternates.___Sadie Gurman can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/sgurman by Sadie Gurman, The Associated Press Posted Jun 19, 2015 2:30 am MDT Last Updated Jun 19, 2015 at 6:00 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email In this image taken from video, Hillary Fay Allen, top second from right, a former fellow grad student with Colorado theater shooter James Holmes, is sworn in by Judge Carlos A. A Scotland Yard spokesman said the early indications were that the attack took place at a nearby residential address and that the victim and attacker were known to one another. It is thought Mr Martinez managed to leave the scene before collapsing in the street.Witnesses said he was barefoot as he ran screaming from the building.Police also said the attack was not believed to be gang related. One witness told the Evening Standard: “My husband told me the boy had been running and then collapsed right in front of our house. I called the police and we started bringing towels and blankets for him. “The police arrived in like three minutes and they started cutting his clothes. Every NHS worker in England will now be paid at least £8.93 per hour, or £17,460 per year if they work full time, as part of a three-year deal and changes to the pay structure of the organisation, collectively endorsed by NHS unions as of Friday 8 June 2018.The pay deal was originally proposed in March 2018. Since then, all 14 NHS unions, which include Unison and Unite, have been consulting with members. As of Friday 8 June, 79% of Unite members voted to accept, with a turnout of 27% of its 100,000 members in the health service. A total of 84% of Unison members voted to accept, with a turnout of 83,500, or 30%.The pay deal will provide an immediate £2,000 increase for lower-paid NHS staff, taking them above the living wage, which is currently set at £8.75 per hour.In the first year of the deal, NHS staff currently at the top of their pay band will see a 3% rise, which will accumulate over the three years to 6.5%. The pay deal also promises higher percentage increases for those lower down in their respective pay bands. These will be delivered through a combination of cost of living pay rises and faster incremental increases. The deal also ensures higher starting salaries for NHS staff, meaningful pay rises on promotion, and faster progression through most pay bands.During negotiations, the Treasury agreed that it would find £4.2 billion of new money to fund the pay deal, to ensure that pay increases do not negatively affect jobs or patent care.Sara Gorton, lead negotiator and head of health at Unison, says: “[The agreement] won’t solve all the NHS’s problems overnight, but it will go a long way towards easing the financial strain suffered by health staff and their families over many years.“But this three-year pay deal must not be a one-off. Health workers will want to know that ministers are committed to decent wage rises across the NHS for the long term, and that this isn’t just a quick fix.“Most importantly, the extra funding means the pay rise won’t be at the expense of services or patient care.“Now the government has begun to put right the damage inflicted by its mean-spirited pay policies, staff will be hoping ministers announce an injection of cash for NHS services in time for its 70th birthday next month.”Sarah Carpenter, national officer for health at Unite, added: “We are pleased that our members have voted by such a large margin to accept the three-year package that was hammered out after some tough negotiations.“However, we don’t regard this result as the end of the story, but a first stage on the long march for pay justice for dedicated staff working in the NHS, after eight years of pay austerity.“And it is that goal to which we will be concentrating our energies in the months ahead.“There are still a number of issues that have to be resolved at a local level, such as ‘buying and selling annual leave for pay’, the implementation of pay progression by individual trusts, and how trusts pay and support their apprentices.“There are also the ongoing discussions regarding the deals in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for health and social care, said: “This is an incredibly well deserved pay rise for staff who have never worked harder. Salaries will increase from between 6.5% and 29%, with some of the biggest increases for the lowest paid. I hope this will also go some way to helping us recruit and retain more brilliant staff in our NHS.” read more

Is Sorry To Bother You good? It’s terrific! What’s it about?…that’s a little difficult to say.Why is that?Because it’s a very complicated and unusual film, inhabiting several different genres and styles at once and has also deliberately kept about half of its storyline out of advertising, so it’s difficult to discuss in full without getting into spoilers. Can you take a shot? Can you imagine a cross between Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, Mike Judge’s Idiocracy, Kids In The Hall: Brain Candy, Friday and Meet The Hollowheads? No… and not just because I’m pretty sure nobody, but you remember Meet The Hollowheads. Can you be a little more detailed?Broadly, it’s a scathing satire of “gig-economy” capitalism set in a dystopian Oakland California and stars Lakeith Stanfield as a down-on-his-luck telemarketer who becomes the company superstar after discovering a previously unknown talent for affecting a supernaturally-perfect “White Voice” (that is, the dubbed-in voice of comedian David Cross). Allowing him the temptation of ascending to the upper-echelons of the company as a “Power Caller” but putting him at odds with his labor-organizing former friends back in the trenches and his radical-revolutionary artist girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson.)That doesn’t sound all that weird – in fact, it kind of sounds like a one-joke comedy sketch stretched out to make a really obvious point.Yeah… did I mention that when I said it’s version of Oakland is “dystopian,” I meant in the literal “dark alternate reality and/or near-future” sense – a cartoonishly-crumbling world where everyone is addicted to a sadistic reality show called “I Got The Shit Kicked Out Of Me!” and the hero’s temptation isn’t just about money. It soon becomes clear that as a “Power Caller” his job is to sell the absurdly evil products and corporate-services we’ve previously been shown as responsible for creating the frightening world around him. Chiefly a “reimagined” work-life solution called “WORRY-FREE” managed by creepy Tech-Bro billionaire Armie Hammer that neatly encapsulates Riley’s shotgun-unsubtle satire: all but coming right out and saying: “Silicon Valley could absolutely repackage present-day slavery as ‘Uber For Labor’ and billions of you idiots would totally go for it.”Okay, that’s pretty out-there. I imagine it’s stylistically offbeat as well?Oh yeah. Stanfield’s “White Voice” actually sounds like an obvious voice-over to the other characters and is treated like a superpower rather than just a skill, most notably, and the intrusive telemarketing calls are visualized by having his workstation literally drop into people’s kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms to interrupt them. But we’re quickly made to see that this is just setting the stage for a storyline that plans to go SO MUCH more bizarre as it keeps building.Let me guess: He goes to the rich-people parties, and it’s all Eyes Wide Shut stuff?Kinda… but then way, way, way stranger than that.Uh-huh. Who exactly is the audience for this?I mean… people who want to see a really original, different movie at this particular point in time? Obviously, it’s a political satire with a lot of points to make about race, class, economics, media, pop culture, philosophy, relationships. It’s definitely a “turn your brain ON” viewing experience, but I wouldn’t necessarily pigeonhole it as having one specific audience moreso than others. Though I would observe that, while fans of American indie/underground cinema will likely be familiar with the “type” of gonzo kitchen-sink energy, you don’t typically see that executed with a predominantly Black cast. So that’s definitely a refreshing dynamic. It’s also incredibly nerdy. Almost certainly new “geek-cinema” classic in the making even as it didn’t necessarily advertise itself as such; with the savage political satire and broad social comedy spaced-out by “look-it-up-later” smartypants references, “existential angst of the overachiever” melodrama, genre-switching surprises that will divide audiences like a hatchet to face and counterculture “It Girl” Thompson’s stealing the movie with an epic sequence sending-up postmodern performance-art built around an extended 80s movie-reference that might be the new gold standard for film-geek nostalgia humor.Who made this? The director is Boots Riley, the prolific underground rapper/artist/political-activist formerly of The Coup and Street Sweeper Social Club. This is his first feature as writer and director. In addition to Stanfield, Hammer and Thompson, Danny Glover, Terry Crews, Omari Hardwick, Jermaine Fowler and Steven Yuen are also in the cast; plus Patton Oswalt as the “White Voice” of another character. Forrest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi’s “Significant Productions” were the main producer muscle behind the project. So you recommend it?Oh hell yeah. It’s a strange one, and you could pick at it in the aftermath and say this or that aspect doesn’t “work” or “fit together” or that certain plot threads feel like tangents… but the overall effect when watching it is more like Riley, his crew and the actors snuck into Hollywood after hours and made a movie on the sly while no one was looking. And while unwieldy and overstuffed it’s possessed of manic energy like everyone involved thought they’d never be allowed to make another one after this so they’d better get it all out of their system this time. A brain-melting yet spirit-cleansing blast of righteous originality that harkens back to the last big “boom” in indie-underground American filmmaking that will all but certainly end up among the 2018 best and most original films. If you’re waiting to pick up a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U this December, Nintendo just made the release that bit more special with the announcement of a Special Edition for US gamers. The standard edition of the game will cost $59.99 and launches on December 4. The Special Edition will release on the same day and includes a matted art card, 11 x 7.75-inch 100+ page art book, custom design USB stick complete with game soundtrack (10 songs), and a standard retail copy of the game all packaged inside a custom box. Pricing has not been revealed, but I suspect it will be in the $80-$100 range considering the contents.Xenoblade Chronicles X is not a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. Nintendo and developer Monolith Soft describe it as a spiritual successor, and players of the Wii game will feel right at home. X retains many features of the last gen title including a very similar battle system and quest log. It’s a game true to the Xeno series.Having been on sale in Japan since April there are already multiple reviews of the game, which have all been very positive. If you like action RPGs and own a Wii U then this is definitely a game to add to your pre-order list. Best Buy has already said to keep an eye on its existing Xenoblade Chronicles X page as it will add a pre-order link for the Special Edition if and when it appears. Other retailers will likely do the same and allow for existing pre-order transfers.Hopefully Nintendo will make the Special Edition available to retailers and not try to limit sales by offering it through their own store alone. However, there will be limited stock so as soon as you see the pre-orders go up grab your copy to avoid disappointment. read more
Officials from Costa Rica’s Environment Ministry (MINAE) held a meeting Wednesday to further an action plan in the wake ofturtle conservationist Jairo Mora’s murder in late May.The 26-year-old Mora was monitoring turtle nests for the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Network (WIDECAST) on Moín Beach the night of May 30 when he was captured, tortured and killed by five masked assailants. Four foreign volunteers were also briefly kidnapped, but escaped unharmed. In the weeks since the murder no suspects have been announced and no arrests have been made.“First of all, we want to say that the investigation is advancing significantly,” Environment Minister René Castro said after the meeting. “We are missing some details, but it is advancing. We have every reason to be optimistic that we will solve this crime.”At Wednesday’s meeting, Castro and Vice Minister of Waters and Oceans José Lino Chávez met with members of Mora’s family and the heads of several environmental groups behind closed doors. The small contingent began hammering out details of ideas pitched at MINAE’s open meeting with members of the press and environmentalists two weeks ago.Though still in a preliminary stage, Castro said the government would allocate ₡20 million ($40,000) for a monument in Mora’s honor, although details of the monument have not been decided. Options include a turtle observation area or an online tribute with video of nesting sea turtles, Castro said.He also affirmed the ministry’s intention of converting Moín Beach, on the northern Caribbean coast near the port of Limón, into a protected area. The ministry has abandoned an original plan proposed by WIDECAST to name the park after Mora, following a request from Mora’s family.MINAE also promised to beef up security along the country’s coasts by allocating “specialized units” to protected coastal areas.“We are talking about boat captains or people who work at marinas,” Castro said. “We are looking for people who are equipped to take on this responsibility.”According to Castro, the units would be trained specifically to deal with coastal threats and would be armed with equipment donated from Japan. Pilot programs for these units will be conducted in Moín and either Bahía Bellena or San Lucas on the Pacific coast, he said.MINAE will hold another open meeting next week to discuss the details of the Moín protected area originally proposed by WIDECAST at the last meeting earlier this month.Related Storieshttp://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/Turtle-conservationist-Jairo-Mora-Sandoval-found-murdered-on-Playa-Moin-in-Costa-Rica_Friday-May-31-2013/http://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/Murdered-Costa-Rican-conservationist-had-been-chased-by-AK-47-wielding-poachers_Sunday-June-02-2013/http://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/Costa-Rica-s-environment-minister-promises-action-in-wake-of-conservationist-s-murder-_Tuesday-June-04-2013/http://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/In-Costa-Rica-a-peace-vigil-for-slain-turtle-conservationist-Jairo-Mora_Wednesday-June-05-2013/http://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/Still-no-arrests-in-slaying-of-Costa-Rican-conservationist_Tuesday-June-11-2013/http://ticotimes.net/More-news/News-Briefs/Costa-Rica-Prosecutor-s-Office-says-it-has-suspects-in-turtle-conservationist-murder_Wednesday-June-12-2013/ Facebook Comments No related posts. read more

organizations committed to instituting a culture of good governance and public accountability in Nigeria through advocacy activism and the mobilization of the youth population as responsible citizens We are non-partisan neither are we a platform for the actualization of any individual’s political ambitions The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it described as unrelenting media trial and persecution of opposition members and perceived opponents of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government through anti-graft agencies It said the trial of its members won’t stop the party from defeating the APC in 2019 National Publicity Secretary Mr Kola Ologbondiyan in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja said members of the opposition were being persecuted under the guise of fighting corruption Ologbondiyan said that whereas the PDP was in no way opposed to the fight against corruption it was completely against government’s resort to media trial and constant harassment of opposition He said the party was against unlawful detention and trumped-up charges against opposition members using various anti-graft agencies particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) “The PDP particularly rejects the emerging trend by the EFCC wherein accused persons and individuals who are still under investigation on alleged corruption charges are paraded and forced to hang criminal tags “This was meted out to former Kaduna State Governor Muktar Yero even when he has not been convicted by any court of competent jurisdiction” he said Recall that Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmad Gumi has also condemned the treatment of Yero like a common criminal PDP added that it is “totally against the desperation by the EFCC working under the instruction of the APC to declare a guilty verdict on accused persons without trial by the courts “This is all in the bid to bring perceived political opponents to public odium and emasculate the opposition ahead of 2019 general elections’’ Ologbondiyan said the PDP also rejected direct interference in ongoing cases including those in courts by appointees of the Presidency particularly members of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption He said the comments and actions of the appointees had continued to escalate media trials and other irregularities in the handling of such cases “The PDP insists in very unequivocal terms that we can no longer continue to stomach the hijacking of the duties of the judiciary by agencies of the executive under the instructions of the Presidency “Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over this unrelenting assault harassment and persecution of opposition members under the guise of fight against corruption’’ he said Ologbondiyan said the fight against corruption must be prosecuted within the ambits of the provisions of the law “Corruption fight cannot be used as an instrument of persecution and clampdown against the opposition’’ he said From that group a senior at Central “Yeah Obama said she doesn’t medical issues or mechanical issues Outside of safety concernsMark Kennedy There are murmurs that one of the accused is the financial whiz of the event as also a major provider of funds for many sabhas in Chennai. It is not easy to touch him Significantly a public hearing and consultation was held in Chennai in which certain allegations were presented before an audience and a group of panelists Social activist Radhika Ganesh (founder of the collective Ek Potlee Ret Ki) who has also been a rallying point for survivors brought in quite a bit of jingoism in her presentation And when a panelist wondered if it would not be a good idea to castrate all men above sixty one struggled to see the point of the meeting A leading dancer present at the hearing agreed that the pitch was not restrained but argued that it is years of bottled-up frustrations erupting now which means the discourse may not always be civilised dignified and sensitive And this is one of the issues that plagues #MeToo in Carnatic music Ganesh on calling out one alleged offender based on an anonymous post branded him with a figurative red-hot poker saying: “Sicko your #TimesUp” It is a bit frightening that in civil society anyone could assume the right to pass verdict on another in so brazen and public a manner Yes the fight is for the underdog and the vulnerable and the nature of the alleged offence is indeed sick but to move swiftly and unhesitatingly from an allegation to a shaming verdict is vigilantism of preposterous proportions There were admissions of possible “collateral damage” in the case of at least one named “perpetrator” His son asked “What if the man — senior respected much liked and innocent of the charge — had simply died of shock and shame at being named like this” And that is the agony such accusations especially when false can inflict #MeToo is too important a movement to fizzle out because of the inbuilt irresponsibility of the act of naming and shaming As a concerned observer eloquently put it #MeToo is not about naming and shaming; it is a crowd sourcing of evidence against sexual predators The nature of sexual crimes is such that one is unlikely to obtain rigorous proof of the offences that will stand up in a court of law But one builds up credibility through a crowd of similar voices? and so no support seems to be coming from that direction. including: We won’t make any more jokes about Prince Charles’ ears.
